In der «Bubenstunde» der Primarschule im Frühling 1969 fertigten wir Knaben Lochkameras aus Karton an, stachen mit einer Nadel ein kleines Loch von ca. 1/2 mm in die eine Seite und brachten auf der gegenüberliegenden Innenseite ein Fotopapier an. Dann ging jeder Schüler mit seiner Schachtel mit dem Finger auf dem Loch nach draussen, stellte die Camera obscura irgendwo hin, richtete sie auf ein beliebiges Sujet, nahm den Finger vom Loch und belichtete ein paar Minuten. Das Fotopapier entwickelten wir in einer Dunkelkammer im Luftschutzkeller des Schulhauses. Welch’ tolle Erinnerungen an die Schulzeit!

Gleiche Aussicht 2019: Bei genauer Betrachtung entdeckt man etliche Häuser, die noch stehen. Die Hochhäuser im Hintergrund sind neueren Datums. - - Same view in 2019: A closer look reveals several houses that are still standing. The high-rise buildings in the background are more recent.
Die hier gezeigte Kartonschachtel ist eine moderne Rekonstruktion aus der Erinnerung, das Original von 1969 ist längst nicht mehr vorhanden - - The cardboard box shown here is a modern reconstruction from memory, the original from 1969 is long gone!

In the «boys’ hour» at primary school in spring 1969, we boys made pinhole cameras out of cardboard, punched a small hole of about 1/2 mm in one side with a needle and attached photographic paper to the opposite inside. Then, each pupil would go outside with his box and with his finger on the hole, put the camera obscura somewhere, point it at any subject, take his finger off the hole and expose for a few minutes. We developed the photo paper in a darkroom in the air-raid shelter of the school building. What great memories of school days!

Zusammen mit meinem Jugendfreund und Nachbarn Urs praktizierte ich diese primitive Art der Fotografie eine Zeitlang auch zu Hause. Die Fotos entwickelten wir im verdunkelten Kinderzimmer in Plastikbecken unter dem Bett!

Na ja, mit Stillhalten während der mehrminütigen Belichtungszeit hatten wir so unsere Mühe…

Als mir im Jahr 2019 die alten verschwommenen Bilder wieder einmal in die Finger gerieten, begann mir Grösseres vorzuschweben; eine Zimmer-Lochkamera! Mein ganzes Studio (Schlafzimmer und Büro) wollte ich in eine Lochkamera verwandeln. Und das just zum 50. Jubiläum der alten Aufnahmen!

Mein Jugendfreund Urs wanderte 1979 nach Kanada aus und stand für diese Vergleichsaufnahme 2019 leider nicht zur Verfügung. - - My childhood friend Urs emigrated to Canada in 1979 and was unfortunately not available for this 2019 comparison photo.

Urs und der Autor 1969 - - Urs and the author 1969

Together with my childhood friend and neighbour, Urs, I also practised this primitive form of photography at home for a while. We developed the photos in the darkened children’s room in plastic basins under the bed!

Well, we sure had a hard time holding still during the exposure time of several minutes…

When in 2019 I got hold of the old blurry pictures again, I started to think bigger; a chamber pinhole camera! I wanted to turn my entire studio (bedroom and work desk) into a pinhole camera. And that was just for the 50th anniversary of the old pictures!

Dass ich im 7. Stock eines achtstöckigen Hochhauses wohne und eine herrliche Weitsicht geniesse, kam meinem Projekt sehr entgegen. An schönen Föhntagen mit Fernsicht in die Alpen bildete sich sogar das Bergpanorama im Zimmer ab.

The fact that I live on the 7th floor of an eight-storey building and enjoy a wonderful panoramic view was very beneficial to my project. On fine foehn days with a view of the distant Alps, even the mountain panorama could be seen in the room.

Ich dichtete das Fenster lichtdicht ab und liess nur ein rundes Loch von zunächst 17 mm frei. Die Grösse entsprach proportional etwa dem Nadelloch der Kartonschachtel und einer Projektionsdistanz («Brennweite») von 8 Zentimeter. Später verengte ich das Loch auf 5 mm und sogar auf 3 mm. Dadurch entstand ein schärferes Abbild, jedoch erforderte dies viel längere Belichtungszeiten.

I sealed the window light-tight and left only a round hole of 17 mm across initially. The diameter corresponded proportionally to the pinhole of the cardboard box and a projection distance («focal length») of 8 centimetres. Later I narrowed the hole to 5 mm and even 3 mm. This produced a sharper image, but required much longer exposure times.

Mit dunkeladaptierten Augen konnte man im verdunkelten Zimmer bereits recht viel von der auf die Wände und das Mobiliar projizierten südlichen Aussenwelt erkennen.

With dark-adapted eyes, one could already make out quite a lot of the outside world to the South, projected onto the walls and furniture in the darkened room.

Dann montierte ich meine Kamera auf ein Stativ, stellte sie so nah an das Loch wie möglich und machte Langzeitbelichtungen. Die Fotos vermittelten einen sehr viel deutlicheren Eindruck von der kopfstehenden Landschaft als von blossem Auge erlebt.

Für die Fotos verwendete ich stets meine Vollformatkamera Canon EOS 6D. Je nach Lochdurchmesser (3/5/17 mm) entstanden die Aufnahmen mit ISO-Werten zwischen 100 und 3200, Blendenwerten meistens zwischen 2.8 und 3.5 und Belichtungszeiten zwischen 30 Sekunden und 8 Minuten.

Then I put my camera on a tripod and placed it as close to the hole as possible and took long exposures. The photos gave a much clearer impression of the upside-down landscape than experienced by the naked eye.

I always used my full-frame camera Canon EOS 6D for the photos. Depending on the hole diameter (3/5/17 mm), the pictures were taken with ISO values between 100 and 3200, aperture values mostly between 2.8 and 3.5 and exposure times between 30 seconds and 8 minutes.

Diesen Gag konnte ich mir nicht verkneifen. Den Klapptritt retouchierte ich für die vertikal gespiegelte Version rechts im Photoshop natürlich weg, damit es aussieht, als ob ich den auf den Atriumhäusern den Kopfstand machte - - I could not resist this gag. Of course, I retouched away the folding step in Photoshop for the vertically mirrored version on the right, so that it looks as if I was doing the headstand on the atrium houses
Auch dieses Selfie eher ein Gag; Selbstauslöser 10 Sekunden, ich rannte auf den Balkon und klammerte mich am Gerüstrohr fest und musste 30 Sekunden stillhalten wie ein Denkmal - - This selfie was also more of a gag; self-timer 10 seconds, I ran onto the balcony and clung to the scaffolding tube and had to hold still for 30 seconds like a monument
Ganz schwach erkennt man auf der Holzmaserung des Schrankes die Projektion einiger Berge (das Bild wurde etwas kontrastverstärkt) - - Very faintly one can see the projection of some mountains on the wood grain of the cabinet (the image has been contrast enhanced a little)

Freilich waren die gestalterischen Möglichkeiten bald einmal ausgeschöpft, die Zimmerlochkamera lässt sich ja nicht einfach in eine andere Blickrichtung schwenken. Eine Versetzung des Loches hätte in meinem Fall nicht viel gebracht. Aber da war ja noch meine Küche mit Blick nach Norden….

Of course, the creative possibilities were soon exhausted, as the chamber pinhole camera cannot simply be swivelled into a different viewing direction. Shifting the hole would not have helped much in my case. But there was still my kitchen with a view to the north….

…. Also zügelte ich die ganze Fensterverdunkelung in die Küche. Auch dort bestimmte ich die Lochplatzierung so, dass auserwählte Objekte auf den Küchenschränken günstig abgebildet würden.

In beiden Räumen erwies es sich als sehr schwierig, eine perfekte Abdunkelung zu erreichen. An allen Saumstellen leckte Licht herein!

…. So I moved the whole window darkening into the kitchen. There, too, I determined the hole placement so that selected objects would be favourably imaged on the kitchen cabinets.

In both rooms it proved very difficult to achieve perfect dimming. Light leaked in along all seams!
